The Benefits of Using Kiln Dried Logs

It appears that summer hasn’t quite got the memo, and as we’re still burning our kiln-dried logs in July, it’s high time we delved further into the benefits of using kiln-dried logs, as not all firewood is created equally! So, whether you’re fuelling a log burner or a fire pit, the wood you choose can make a significant difference to the quality of your fire.

One of the best options available is kiln-dried logs, which are becoming an increasingly popular choice for good reason! In this blog post, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of using kiln-dried logs and why they perform head and shoulders above other types of firewood on the market.

What are kiln-dried logs?

As the name indicates, kiln-dried logs are logs that have been dried in kilns and are designed to reduce the moisture content of logs in a controlled and consistent way, resulting in high-quality firewood that is ready to burn. Typically sitting under 20% moisture, kiln-dried logs are much drier than seasoned or green logs so you can expect a much better burn, especially if they’re Ready to Burn Certified, like ours are!

What are the benefits of using kiln-dried logs?

  • Higher Efficiency and Heat Output: Kiln-dried logs burn hotter and more efficiently than seasoned wood, with the low moisture content allowing them to ignite quickly and maintain a steady and high temperature. This means you’ll get more heat from each log, making your log burner more effective at warming your home.
  • Reduced Smoke: If you’ve ever experienced logs with a high moisture content, you’ll understand the smoke that can be produced – ask my daughter who has experienced this and spent her evening watching TV with her goggles on! With kiln-dried logs, smoke isn’t an issue and will also mean that your flue remains cleaner for longer!
  • Easy to Light and Maintain: Getting a fire started with kiln-dried logs is a breeze as their low moisture content makes them so much easier to ignite than sub-par seasoned logs. And, once lit, kiln-dried logs burn consistently and require less topping up, allowing you to put your feet up and enjoy the ambience.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Kiln-dried logs are a more environmentally friendly option for several reasons. First, their efficient burn means less wood is needed to produce the same amount of heat which reduces the demand and impact on our forests. Second, the reduced smoke output means fewer pollutants are released into the air!
  • Longer Shelf Life: Because kiln-dried logs have had the majority of their moisture removed, they are less susceptible to things such as mould and infestations, which gives them a longer shelf-life when compared to other types of firewood, making them a good choice for long-term storage.
  • Consistent Quality: As the logs are dried in a controlled kiln, the moisture and performance of each log are consistent across the board, meaning you can rely on your delivery of kiln-dried logs to perform consistently.

While kiln-dried logs come at a slightly higher cost than seasoned logs, the performance of your fire and the benefits you’ll see and feel by making the switch will make it well worth the investment.
